New EAW Commercial SMS Series Loudspeakers Debut at NSCA

Las Vegas, NV – March 16, 2006, NSCA – At the 2006 NSCA Convention in Las Vegas, EAW is debuting the new EAW Commercial SMS Series of surface-mount loudspeakers. The SMS Series benefits from EAW’s proprietary new Theta Technology™ that provides directional control, output levels and performance quality previously only associated with much larger loudspeakers.

Intended for a wide variety of paging and background music applications, the SMS Series applies Theta Technology to overcome the poor pattern control and inconsistent power response that often plague typical commercial designs. The goal with the SMS Series was to provide contractors with a solution for installations where improved coverage and sound quality is key, but space and budgets demand that fewer loudspeakers and fewer pieces of supporting equipment be specified.

SMS Series loudspeakers offer a two-way design, each with dedicated high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) subsystems. The series is comprised of three distinct families of different size and output levels, most available in beamwidth choices of 90 degrees by 90 degrees, 90 degrees by 40 degrees and 120 degrees by 40 degrees.

Theta Technology involves the application of several sophisticated pattern control solutions developed by EAW for their renowned larger-format professional loudspeaker products. SMS brings these proven techniques to a low-cost, smaller-format loudspeaker.

Specifically, the SMS Series utilizes tuned driver spacing to create LF pattern control by placing pairs of smaller woofers symmetrically around the HF subsystem. The spaced woofers maintain pattern control into the LF range to complement the wide-by-narrow coverages delivered by the specially-design HF subsystems.

The result is wide, well-controlled horizontal patterns, meaning less loudspeakers are needed per project. In addition, the well-controlled vertical patterns allow the installer to easily avoid projecting sound onto ceilings and other highly reflective surfaces. Also, transient response is optimized for maximum intelligibility, with high efficiency translating to lower power requirements.

The SMS Series loudspeakers also feature Clip-Fit™, a new proprietary mounting system, which adds an unprecedented level of ease to installation, in turn saving installers both time and money. All connections for the loudspeaker are contained within the Clip-Fit wall-mount unit via a single Molex connector, with the wall-mount unit pre-mounted at the designed position on a wall.

The installer then just "clips" the loudspeakers onto the Clip-Fit arm, and in one motion, the audio connection is terminated and the loudspeaker is live. The wall mount unit has an approximate range of 63 degrees (pan) by 78 degrees (tilt).

Two versions of the wall mount unit are available. The CF-4TX provides constant voltage with a low-loss transformer for 70-volt/100-volt applications. Tap settings of 128, 64, 32 and 16 watts are selectable via a four-position switch on the front of the unit. Meanwhile, the CF-4LX provides a direct connection for Low-Z applications.

The SMS Series Loudspeakers are currently on display at NSCA, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, March 16-18, 2006, booth #2337.
